The final chapter in the life of St. Vincent's Mechanical Heart Valve made in Singapore ended in 1995. The Spiral Vortex Ventricular Assist Device using the valve was designed by heart surgeon, Prof. Chun-Xiu Ye of Shanghai. Pictured with him at the facility in Sydney is Senior Science Officer, Allen Nugent in 1990. The two along with Prof. Mitsuo Umezu (on left) were recruited by Dr. Chang to advance his dream of a low cost VAD. Umezu had previously worked on the Toyobo VAD in Japan implanted in the sheep he’s holding. The two groups were not directly connected but when St. Vincents Meditech ceased operations in 1995, the project died along with production the valve. With the acute shortage of donor hearts, researchers focused efforts on the temporary use of VADs while awaiting donor hearts. Article on left from APEX, Vol 3 No 2, Spring 1988.
